Here at the Red Hill Ranch is rich, red sandy-loam soil. During the winter months we fertilize the land by tilling horse and cow manure into the garden. We never use any kind of chemical in our garden. We are blessed to have an abundant amount of native red ants on our property. They are good for the soil and actually help combat the dreaded fire ants! This land had lain fallow for several years before we came along and the result is an abundance of wildlife and a large variety of insects. The soil is rich and produces a wonderful garden every year. There will be blackeyed peas, okra, crookneck and scallop squash, onions, tomatoes, cantaloupe, peaches, melons and more. We will offer a variety of fresh herbs and once the asparagus bed matures, will have tender asparagus shoots! In the photos you'll see what the garden looks like in early spring as we prepare to plant and also what the garden looks like in peak production. We love it out here! We call our chickens "The Sisters" - they love to forage in the freshly tilled dirt. We had to fuss at them for eating Nita's freshly planted onion starts! Eventually "The Sisters" will have to go back to their fenced yard! Shappy-Cat loves to hang out with Nita Sue! |
